Modular Process Skids Explained – The Advantages and Applications of Skidded Systems
Modular process skids are self-contained (or “skidded”) systems that are designed to carry out complete industrial processes such as fluid mixing, batch blending, distillation, or wastewater processing.
Manufacturers of modular process skids integrate all of the specialized equipment required to carry out these unique processes into standalone skidded frames or modules. This allows for much easier transportation, a much simpler setup procedure, and greater service flexibility due to the modularity and space-saving design of the equipment.
Alloy Fabrication is one of the Reading, PA region’s leading fabricators of custom modular process systems and industrial pipe skids.
An Overview of Modular Process Skids
Each custom modular process skid is engineered around the unique requirements of the specific process being carried out. Essentially, the finished product is a turnkey package of specialized equipment including fabricated tanks, valves, and associated piping systems – all designed and integrated for maximum transportability.
Modularity means that the skidded system can be disassembled to make transportation even easier. In certain applications, modular equipment can be easily swapped in and out for complex processes which do not allow a one-and-done equipment solution.
Process skids are sometimes referred to as “systems in a box” in reference to their fully integrated designs. A skidded system is often manufactured as an alternative to conventional stick-built processing equipment. In contrast, stick-built systems require separate pieces of equipment and components to be shipped and manually installed at each new job site, drastically complicating the setup process.
The Advantages of Skidded Process Systems:
- Streamlined: Substantially reduces job setup time and overall labor costs.
- Highly Portable: Much easier to transport with far less geographic and spatial limitations.
- Quality and Consistency: Precision fabrication of the equipment is performed in a controlled environment, as opposed to setting up the equipment on the fly.
- Tried and Tested: Testing of the process skid system is performed at the manufacturer’s facility to ensure functional performance and reliability before the equipment is used in the field.
- A More Reliable Industrial Equipment Solution: Quality fabricated modular process skids are built to last, while future equipment inspections and maintenance are easier to perform.
Case Study: Modular Process Skid Engineered as a More Sustainable Paper Manufacturing Solution
Alloy Fabrication has manufactured modular process systems and custom pipe skids for a wide variety of industrial applications and specialized production processes.

Pictured is a multi-skidded process system that we manufactured for one of the industry’s leading paper manufacturing companies. This innovative equipment solution was uniquely designed to reduce the cost of paper production through increasing the amount of filler material used, thus reducing the amount of paper fiber needed. Simultaneously, the reduction in paper fiber creates a more sustainable, eco-friendly process.
